Golden Technologies, Inc. has developed a sophisticated offsite backup strategy which offers customers secure, automated offsite backups at a reasonable price. The figure below outlines the setup of hardware to accomplish this solution:

Staging Server

A staging server at the customer's location functions as the brains of the backup process. It is the conduit between the customer's computers and the backup server. The staging server can be configured to communicate with nearly any other type of computer whether it is a Windows workstation, Windows server, Novell server or any flavor of UNIX/Linux/BSD/Mac OS. The backup scripts reside on the staging server. These are the instructions of what to back up and when to do it and can be set up in any manner desired. Once set up, the process is fully automated requiring no user intervention.

During a backup, the staging server obtains data from the customer's computers, encrypts the data for transport and securely sends it to the backup server. No data is actually stored on the staging server. The physical backing up of files utilizes a very complex algorithm which provides a very fast method for bringing remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the differences in the files across the link. Thus if a small change to a 100 MB file is made, only a tiny fraction of the file will be transferred to the backup server, not the entire 100 MB.

Backup Server Farm

The backup server farm resides in Golden Technologies climate controlled data center. The servers contains mirrored drives, is backed by UPS and generator and is accessible at all times via redundant T1 internet connections. The backup server is behind a firewall, preventing unauthorized access. Customers may access their files via SSH with a username and password. A freely available and simple to use product called WinSCP is recommended. WinSCP allows users to drag and drop files from backup to their local computer.

Managed Solution:
Golden Technologies manages all aspects of the backup, including monitoring of all backup processes, remediation of all errors in the backup process, addition of files to be backed up, restoration of files at the customer request, etc.

Non-Managed Solution:
Customer is responsible for monitoring of backup process for errors and omissions, restoration of files, etc. Golden Technologies is happy to assist on a time and materials basis.
